Hearing Southeast Asia

This long-overdue study of sound in Southeast Asia offers non-Western perspectives in a field that is far too often Eurocentric. It goes beyond examining sound in isolation to consider the sociocultural context. Here, detailed descriptions are made of sounds and sound-making in their setting, especially how they relate to hierarchy and power.
