Set in 1900s, in a class-divided community, this semi-autobiographical novel explores the emotional conflicts through the protagonist, Paul Morel, a young man in a suffocating relationships with a demanding mother and two very different lovers. In the same time it offers a vivid account of early 20th century working class life, being profoundly influenced by the developments of the Industrial Revolution.
It is a pre-Freudian exploration of love and possessiveness.
