Vrăjitoarea - cu nasul coroiat, tenul verzui, alunița păroasă în colțul gurii cu dinți strâmbi, călare pe mătură (simbol pervertit al căminului curat) - este simbolul femeii dificile, cea care nu se conformează modelului patriarhal de mamă devotată, casnică desăvârșită și soție ascultătoare. Cum poate fi o astfel de femeie - neinteresată să se sacrifice pentru alții, indiferentă la părerea societății, incapabilă să-și sublime furia - altfel decât hidoasă?
