Review - "Night School" by C. J. Daughtery
It’s finally that time of the year, fellow teens. October has come!!! Are you ready for the cozy weather, the scary movies, the hot chocolate? Ok, let’s be a bit realistic – I for one am way too scared to watch horror movies. But one thing that will for sure happen during this spooky month is reading.
I find that sometimes reading can be more fun if it’s themed – so, in honour of Halloween, the book I chose to read and review is Night School, by C.J. Daughtery (don’t let the cover fool you, this book is great!).
To Allie Sheridan, the protagonist of the novel, the world around her seems to be falling apart. When at school, she can’t wait to get home – when at home, going out and starting trouble seems like a good idea. Hint – it isn’t, and Allie would surely agree, since these ‘ideas’ have gotten her arrested – again. Only this time, her parents decide that it is time for Allie to get back on the right track. After all, she was a perfect child until the day her bigger brother disappeared. Allie is sent to Cimmeria, a boarding school that hides more secrets than a group of teenage girls. At the new school, she makes new friends, but enemies as well. Hidden feelings are revealed, hearts are broken, and a secret bigger than anything Allie could’ve imagined turns her world upside down.
One of the reasons I really enjoyed this novel was because it’s really atmospheric. Throughout the book I would sometimes get ‘the chills', at other times I would be running trough the forest with Allie, or learn along her side. Another reason to read this book is simple – the characters. You can really see the protagonist undergo changes, especially regarding her inner self. In my opinion, character growth is an important factor in any story, no matter how long or short. Night School presents a set of teenagers who, by going trough some pretty nasty, although sometimes nice experiences, grow. Mentally and emotionally.
Okay, finishing off – I think that C.J. Daughtery’s novel is awfully funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking, basically giving you an insight into a not so normal teenage girl’s life.
