În limbaj specializat, historical fantasy se mai numește și low fantasy. Nu pentru că ar fi de calitate îndoilenică. Ci pentru că, spre deosebire de genul high fantasy (unde autorul construiește o lume complet nouă, un univers alternativ), literatura low fantasy se petrece în lumea noastră și are repere care ne sunt familiare. Romanele din sub-genul historical fantasy trebuie să recreeze veridic o lume trecută, în care să introducă armonios elementele fantastice.
